Established in 1985, The Carrera has had many changes in it's race format. In the beginning it was a Coast to Coast race, from the Port of Ensenada on the Pacific Ocean to San Felipe on the Sea of Cortéz. Then it changed administration and venue. Starting still in Ensenada running to the Village of Valle de la Trinidad then back to Ensenada.

With the constant growth of the surrounding areas, The race has changed hands again and has been run for the past 7 years on the Old Road (see map) from Ensenada To La Mision. For the Past 3 years the Automobile Club Of Ensenada and a local sponsor (Mister Neon de Mexico) have been organizing the event, with much success. Safety measures have been increased greatly, with more than 70 volunteers and Federal Police closing the road.

The race consists of three laps over a 34 mi. course on the Old Road to La Mision. Cars start at :30 sec intervals. When all arrive at La Mision the same procedure is done to return to San Miguel, Then we do it all over again two more times!!

Qualifying is on Friday at the Road to “La Bufadora” (see map), This is a road 12 mi south of Ensenada. Cars line up at the bottom of the hill and  race up the 3mi. stage at 30 second intervals. The finishing order in qualifying determines the starting order for the race on Saturday. Team that do not qualify, will be assigned starting positions at the rear.

The ceremonial start Saturday will be at 8:30 am in front of the Ensenada Convention Center on the Boulevard Costero, From here we will Transit at normal speeds to the start of the first stage ,at the San Miguel Bridge.

Until Recent years This Race had been dominated by The Silver State Classic Challenge guys from Las Vegas Nevada. BUT the locals from Ensenada have figured it out (finely) it has been won twice and second twice by the same local Porfirio Guiterrez, in a 5.0 Mustang Steve Vukas of the local club also picked up a win In a Eagle Talon. But now the SSCC guys have brought out a new improved edition of their Past Champ Carl Young, In the form of Michael Judy from Fresno California in a Mustang Cobra He is now the reigning champion over the event.

Cars of all types race in this event. In earlier years It was won by Hal Needham in the #33 Skoal Bandit, It was won by mini cooper guru David Bouzaglou in a Porsche Targa, Steve Vukas used at one time a Cosworth Lola, There is always the Corvette contingent, Pantera, Mazda, BMW, you name it, it has run here.
